Pope rewrites prayer following Jewish protest

LONDON – Jewish leaders have welcomed Pope Benedict XVI’s decision to reformulate the Catholic Church’s traditional Good Friday prayers.

The removal of references to the “darkness” and “blindness” of the Jews for their refusal to recognize Jesus as the messiah was a sign the pope was “deeply committed to advancing the relationship with the Jewish Community,” Rabbi David Rosen, chairman of the International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations, told The Jerusalem Post.

The new text will drop all reference to the “blindness” of the Jews, Milan’s Il Giornale newspaper reported on January 18. The pope has prepared a draft version of the new prayer, which will be released in time for Holy Week celebrations in March, the report said.

In July, Benedict issued a “Motu Proprio” edict permitting the use of the 1962 Latin Tridentine missal during prayers.

The Latin prayers for Good Friday ask Catholics to “pray also for the Jews that the Lord our God may take the veil from their hearts and that they also may acknowledge Our Lord Jesus Christ,” and ask God not to “refuse your mercy even to the Jews; hear the prayers which we offer for the blindness of that people so that they may acknowledge the light of your truth, which is Christ, and be delivered from their darkness.”

The move upset Jewish leaders, and prompted the Chief Rabbinate to write to the pope expressing their concern.

Abraham H. Foxman, US director of the Anti-Defamation League, said then he was “extremely disappointed and deeply offended” by the reintroduction of “insulting anti-Jewish language” that would “now permit Catholics to utter such hurtful and insulting words.”

“This is a theological setback in the religious life of Catholics and a body blow to Catholic-Jewish relations,” he said on July 6.

Catholic leaders were quick to downplay the anti-Jewish aspects of the prayers, but added that the call for conversion would likely be retained. In a July 11 interview in Avvenire, an Italian-Catholic newspaper, Vatican official Archbishop Angelo Amato denied the Latin prayers were anti-Jewish.

He said Catholics pray first “for our own conversion… And then we pray for the conversion of all Christians and of all non-Christians. The Gospel is for all.”

Rosen said the July edict had nothing to do with Jews, adding that there was some “confusion” surrounding the concept of “conversion.”

“Used in the sense that Archbishop Amato uses it, it does not mean the acceptance of the Christian Faith by a non-Christian,” he said.

Rosen said last week that his “sources” in the Vatican “indicate that the new text composed by Pope Benedict does not call for the Jew to accept the Christian faith but is in keeping with the 1970 prayer commonly used by the Church in the vernacular that prays for the physical and spiritual well being of the Jews.”

This pope has done more than just talk about improving relations between the two faiths, he said. “He invited many of us to his predecessor’s funeral; to his own coronation; and he received our IJCIC [International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations] delegation before he even received Protestant groups, let alone groups from other faiths. All this is unprecedented.”

The Vatican would not confirm the Il Giornale report, and has declined comment.

US institute raps historians over Allied response to Shoah

An American Holocaust institute has criticized US and British historians for “distorting and misrepresenting” the Allied response to the genocide of Europeans Jews by Nazi Germany.

The criticism of the authors by the Washington-based David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies comes after President George W. Bush said on January 11 that the US should have bombed Auschwitz during World War II, in the first such public statement by an American president.

Those the Wyman Institute singled out for censure included American historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr, who opposed the bombing of Auschwitz, as well as statements exaggerating Winston Churchill’s aid to European Jewry during the Third Reich, some of which were made by his official biographer, British historian Martin Gilbert.

In his posthumously published diaries, Schlesinger claimed that the difference between the Allies bombing Auschwitz and the Germans killing Jews in Auschwitz was that bombing the camp would have killed Jews more quickly.

Schlesinger’s statement topped the Wyman Institute’s listing of the “10 most absurd” statements of 2007 about how the Allies responded to the Nazi genocide.

“In fact, bombing the camps might or might not have resulted in some Jewish casualties, but not in numbers even remotely close to those being killed by the Nazis, and bombing the railroad lines in all likelihood would have resulted in few if any Jewish casualties, since the planes would be targeting the railroad tracks and bridges, not the railroad cars moving along them,” the Wyman Institute said.

The US had detailed reports about Auschwitz toward the end of WWII from escaped prisoners, but chose not to bomb the camp, or the rail lines leading to it, on the grounds that it would have diverted military resources.

But respected Holocaust historians say the Allies’ decision not to bomb the camp or the railway lines, even as they bombed German oil factories less than 8 km. away, stemmed from indifference to the plight of the Jews, and that the Allies could have saved hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews gassed during 1944.

Two statements by Gilbert on Churchill’s relationship with the Jews contained in the historian’s Churchill and the Jews: A Lifelong Friendship were also faulted by the Wyman Institute as being inaccurate, including when Gilbert wrote that Churchill always made time to deal with Jewish issues.

“In fact, Churchill refused to deal personally with news of the Holocaust or appeals for rescue, directing all such inquiries to the Foreign Office, which prepared the replies,” the Wyman Institute said.

“Since the late 1960s, a significant amount of serious scholarly research has been done concerning the Allies’ response to the Holocaust, and as new records are made available, important new work is being done in the field,” said Prof David S. Wyman, author of The Abandonment of the Jews: America and the Holocaust, 1941-1945.

“Yet, sadly, errors and distortions – many of them severe – also continue to appear in some books and articles, sometimes motivated by partisanship, sometimes by just plain carelessness,” he said.

“Historians of the Holocaust have a solemn obligation to delve deeply into the archives and produce works that are based on original and impartial research,” said Dr. Rafael Medoff, director of the Wyman Institute.

“The public is counting on us to shed light on these difficult subjects, so that today’s generation can learn the lessons of the Allies’ apathetic response to the Holocaust,” he said.

Behind the lines: prince considers (brief) media career

If you were trying to think of a suitable career for a future heir to the throne it would be difficult to come up with one more improbable than journalism – never mind for a royal whose mother was hounded by the fourth estate and whose father holds it in thinly veiled contempt. But if senior Clarence House courtiers have their way Prince William will follow his spells in each of the armed services with a shorter one next year in the newsroom of a national newspaper. The brief taste of life in the media is one of a series of “work experience” placements being discussed as part of a plan to prepare the prince for public life – and ultimately the throne. While he is unlikely to join the ratpack or the paparazzi waiting for the appearance of his girlfriend, Kate Middleton, the Clarence House plan raises the possibility that soon his byline, presumably William Wales, will appear on something other than the court circular.

One person involved in the decision-making said: “I think it would be a good idea for him to find out how the media works. It’s something I would like to see him do.”

The prince, who has already served in the army, is currently undergoing training with the RAF in Lincolnshire to become a pilot and later this year will spend time with the Royal Navy. After that, advisers are keen for him to undertake a range of training in civilian life, to complete his education in how the country he will one day rule operates.

“He’s learned about the armed forces,” the official said, “now he has to learn about the state.”

Among the options is spending time at the Foreign Office or in a government department to watch the civil service at work – though not Downing Street, where he would potentially be embroiled in partisan political issues – or in sport, the legal profession, or even the Church of England, of whose faith he will one day be defender.

Clarence House insisted yesterday that no decisions had been taken and concentration was still on the prince’s military career. We know pretty well what Prince Charles thinks of the media – at a press call in Switzerland three years ago he famously described the BBC’s inoffensive royal correspondent, Nicholas Witchell, as ghastly.

But officials think inside knowledge of how the folk who will inevitably dog him for the rest of his life actually operate might prove beneficial.

But if the plan for William’s work experience as a member of the media goes ahead, courtiers will face a ticklish question: at which paper? Although one official refused to rule out a spell at a tabloid, such a choice would be littered with potential pitfalls, not least in ensuring undying enmity from the thwarted rival.

Mid-market papers such as the Daily Mail have grown stridently hostile to his father, while the Daily Express remains stuck in the time-warp of Diana-olatry, reminding its ageing readership what William’s mother used to look like by regularly placing her photograph on its front page.

With the Independent and Financial Times spurning royal coverage, that would seem to leave the Times, Daily Telegraph and Guardian. Courtiers retain a soft spot for the posh people’s paper, still regarding the Times as the voice of the establishment, while the Telegraph, the most ostentatiously obsequious, seems to receive few editorial favours from the palace for its loyalty, though the Queen is known to enjoy the crossword so much that she once complained when it was moved. Both papers, however, are edited by former colleagues of Paddy Harverson, Prince Charles’s press officer.

Could the Guardian, favoured by figures as diverse as Jason Bourne and Harold Shipman, be in the running? Moderately republican in outlook – hence perhaps less slavish and more independent – we do at least share an interest in some of the prince’s environmental and social issues, such as housing.

Adolf Hitler: 75 years to power in Germany

For Hitler, the SA[today you can say "Bin Laden" Bush] precisely because of terror, which they exercised, in the first phase of the takeover of power is extremely useful. The one he can help her with his opponents intimidated and terrorized, on the other hand he can with the Conservatives as the only person, which is in a position to subdue the SA. Depending on the circumstances, he implicitly threatened with the SA truly free hand to, or promises they moderating market.

With the closure of the Alliance, there is Hitler frugal. He says nothing more than the Chancellor and two of the ministries of the Nazi Party to claim. But one day later, Hitler begins his right to enforce totality: On February solves Reich President Hindenburg to the desire of Hitler to the Reichstag.

Hindenburg is a targeted disinformation to – he explains that the fallen ex-Chancellor of Schleicher revolt and wanted him to the President, wanted to be arrested. Hindenburg believes Hitler and Papen.

Four days later by emergency decree assembly and press freedom substantially restricted. That paves the way for the unprecedented influence of the Nazi party voters in the next elections briefly – for which it has been held for safe absolute majority but again miss. The NSDAP reached 43.9 percent of the votes.

Jim Rogers-”I sit on the falling dollar”to make big money!

Before two decades, the American investor Jim Rogers as a strong proponent of the Vienna Stock Exchange. Meanwhile, he is from the USA and from their financial assets withdrawn and prefers Asia and the commodities market. In an interview with Michael friend he explains his view of things.

More on the topic
Success
Worry-free in the future!
Paid through
STANDARD: How would you describe the current economic situation in the USA “?

Rogers: America is clearly in a recession. The real estate, automobile and financial sectors are even worse off – in an economic crisis (depression), as it surely everyone in the construction industry would call.

STANDARD: What is it to learn?

Rogers: That is not easy to forgive loans. That one no houses and nothing else as a gift. The crisis was the worst credit bubble caused, we have ever experienced in America. Vendors are cautious now, the next generation will not forgive loans crazy, but the following will do it again. It always happens like that.

STANDARD: Before.Warn you since last spring. Do you now, you have always said yes’s?

Rogers: Well, I did always say (laughs). But I was laughing, so I knew that I was right. I have big Wall Street values such as Fanny Mae or Citibank to bring out in the stocks.

STANDARD: Who seems now learn?

Rogers: Perhaps the note bankers worldwide. To my pleasure, your chancellor, Alfred Gusenbauer, publicly declared that it is not the same as the Americans should do (the rate decrease, see note). I think he is right, that was a serious mistake. That will lead to even higher inflation lead to an even worse recession. Often, it is better to happen a recession, as with all means to mitigate. We have every five or six years a, it’s not bad.

STANDARD: You have just returned from Chancellor Gusenbauer. How is your relationship with him?

Rogers: We informally discuss financial and economic matters. Again, I think it is very good that he in Davos has expressed the hope that the European Central Bank (ECB) is not the fault of the Federal Reserve repeated. And also that he return from Vienna a strong financial centre, especially for Eastern Europe will make.****

STANDARD: you are than that which the stock market dropped in the middle of the eighties “a wake up”.

Rogers: Maybe I can do a little of this second phase.

STANDARD: You have a designated after you Commodities Index. Many commodities are traded in dollars – how long does it take?

Rogers: Eventually, the dollar’s status as a reserve currency in the world to lose. The people are turning to already, especially the enemies of America, such as Venezuela and Iran.

STANDARD: Is it economically or politically motivated?

Rogers: Both. Even some American friends now say: Wait a minute, maybe what is not right with America, and we should diversify. In order to return the currency to devalue has never led to success.

STANDARD: Is America on the right path?

Rogers: America is a mature society. But it has taken over – geopolitically, militarily, financially, in almost every respect. His position is weaker than a big symbol, certainly in comparison with Asia, probably with Europe.

STANDARD: What would you recommend to the next president?

Rogers: Look, the problems can be solved. But who compete with the program, that the whole system needs to change, which is not elected. We must change the tax system. In the United States we tax savings and investment – successful states taxing consumption. The education system should be changed, as the health system, we give four or five times as much as that of all others, and our health-care arrives at the 22nd Or 23 Square. Our lawyers litigate and complain every down, which caused enormous additional costs.

In addition, our borders must be opened for immigrants. And another thing: America has troops in 120 countries around the world stationed. Bring them home! We only make us enemies, our country is not safer, and it costs us a fortune.

STANDARD: The resorting said the Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul. They argued again, would you choose him.

Rogers: I have said that he was the only one who understands the situation. Losing? We will see it in November. Currently, he has no chance.

STANDARD: What about those who have a chance?

Rogers: I would not of them. I have never voted for the winner, as always protest. If we only choose bottles, then we always brings bottles. Maybe one day we will understand that we will not choose bottles.

STANDARD: Speaking of that last November, called the Fed chief Ben Bernanke “either totally insane, a charlatan or a complete liar.” Are you?

Rogers: I think he is not a liar. It is only a fool. He understands nothing about economics, markets, currencies. What he has done since November, confirmed me in it. With God, he’s crazy! He signals to the rest of the world: We are the value of the dollar does not matter. Anyone who understands what he says is based on the falling dollar. Even I do.

STANDARD: If you do so and generally turn their backs on America, you are therefore sometimes referred to as unpatriotic insults?

Rogers: From madman again. My answer is: I thought, this is America, and as Americans, I can live where I want. And the Financial: Well, we can acknowledge the reality and to protect, or you can with the other down the river.

STANDARD: You advocate investment in China now, as you have previously favoured the Vienna Stock Exchange.

Rogers: Because I am still happy, the Vienna stock market is better off than others. But I have less shares than in the past. Currently, I prefer commodities and currencies. THE STANDARD, print edition, 04.02.2008)*************

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Google Inc.’s YouTube unit, the free video-sharing Web site, bowed Friday to Viacom Inc.’s sweeping demand that it remove more than 100,000 of its videos from the site.
Viacom issued the demand after months of failed negotiations to strike a content-licensing deal with Google (GOOG:

It remains to be seen just what impact this might have on YouTube’s popularity. Clips from MTV and other Viacom properties have been among the most popular on the site; some have been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.
Late Friday, clips from Viacom’s MTV network disappeared from the site, according to Viacom. But others were available; some already viewed more than 500,000 times each.

“It’s unfortunate that Viacom will no longer be able to benefit from YouTube’s passionate audience, which has helped to promote many of Viacom’s shows,” a YouTube representative wrote in an email statement.
Big media
Viacom’s action, in light of YouTube’s response, raises the question whether other major U.S. entertainment firms will follow suit. While many have asked YouTube to remove small numbers of videos at a time, Viacom appears to be the first major U.S. entertainment provider to ask for all its clips to be removed.
Yet Google says it’s already reached licensing deals with some other entertainment providers. At least one major U.S. entertainment provider, News Corp., said Friday they have no intention of asking for such a comprehensive take-down.
According to Viacom, Google has compounded the problem lately by allowing its Google Video Web site to include YouTube videos.
“After months of ongoing discussions with YouTube and Google, it has become clear that YouTube is unwilling to come to a fair market agreement that would make Viacom content available to YouTube users,” Viacom said in its statement.
“YouTube and Google retain all of the revenue generated from this practice, without extending fair compensation to the people who have expended all of the effort and cost to create it.
“Our hope is that YouTube and Google will support a fair and authorized distribution model that allows consumers to continue to enjoy our very popular content now and in the future,” Viacom said in its statement.
Viacom’s showdown comes three weeks after it introduced “Acceptable TV,” which it described in Viacom press materials as “reforming the runaway user-generated content movement.”
